119 - SIMON, Armand The Fall of the House of Usher XV. September 15, 1939 Pencil, black ink, 25.5 x 19.2 cm, vellum, signed, titled, and dated "15.9.39" in pencil (two small spots in the drawing, small thumbtack holes in the margins, old adhesive residue on the reverse, margins slightly rubbed). The subject of this "The Fall of the House of Usher" is well known—it is the famous fantasy short story by Edgar Poe—a writer greatly admired by the Surrealists—included in "Extraordinary New Tales." Roderik Usher and his twin sister Madeline live secluded in a sinister ancestral home, a house that seems to instill in its inhabitants a sort of degenerative illness. Before disappearing into a smoky fog shrouding a nearby marshy pond, the house’s walls crack, the windows shatter, and the brother and sister seem to suffer the same fate. Their faces—here depicted within a medallion whose outline is formed by two nude women—are disfigured and contorted in pain. The entire drawing, dotted with slanting downward lines, seems itself to be cracking, just as in Poe’s tale. The numbering on this drawing indicates that Simon produced at least 15 drawings based on “The Fall of the House of Usher”; numbers I and II in this series are held in the collections of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Prov. [Gita Brys-Schatan].
