430 - Félicien Rops, Set of 3 engravings. 1880–96. 1) Hippodrome de Cythére - Sports de l'amour. ca. 1880. Heliogravure with drypoint retouching. 206x144 mm. Sheet: 288x202 mm. Charming remark in the lower margin. Work created for the series *Les Cent légers croquis sans prétention pour réjouir les honnêtes gens* (1878–1881), commissioned by the bibliophile Jules Noilly to mock the hypocrisies of respectable bourgeois society. In the ancient world, Cythera, one of the Greek islands, was believed to be the birthplace of Venus. Thus, the island became sacred to the goddess and to love. In this engraving, we see one of Rops’s favorite motifs: the woman with a puppet. The central femme fatale, naked except for her high heels—a contemporary goddess—holds a puppet in her hand; the man, whom she has dominated and manipulated into submission, is reduced to a mere toy, defenseless and comical. 2) Le Doigt dans l’œil. 1882. Drypoint with soft-ground retouching on Japan paper. On the plate: “Today, May 3, 1882—The Doigt dans l’œil Society will celebrate the anniversary of its founding / Prix de vertu.” Titled in brown ink in the lower right corner. 3) *Théâtre des fantasmes féminines* (*Les marionnettes de l’amour*). ca. 1896. Heliogravure with retouching. 145x100 mm. Sheet: 288 x 203 mm. Monogrammed on the plate in the lower left corner. (3) WORKS 1 and 2: Minor marginal defects. Engravings in excellent condition. WORK 3: Scattered foxing and signs of wear. Engraving in good condition.
