422 - Max Klinger, Zelt - Opus XIV, Parts I/II. 1915–16. A pair of complete folio-sized portfolios (600x410 mm each) in cloth-covered cardboard, containing 46 marvelous etchings and aquatints on mounted tissue paper (22 plates in Volume I, 24 plates in Volume II). Both volumes each contain a woodcut title page and table of contents with titles in black and the artist’s name printed in red. 228x178 mm each. Sheets: 582x402 mm each. Beyer, 382–383. Each plate bears, printed in the lower margin, the author’s name, the title, and the printer’s name, along with the edition number embossed in relief. These volumes are part of the first and only contemporary edition of 100 copies. A monumental work based on the 1912 collection *Ballads of the Wild World* by the poet Richard Dehmel. The text directly inspired the German Symbolist painter and sculptor Max Klinger to create his final series of engravings, titled *Zelt* (“The Tent”), completed in 1915. Klinger’s work transposes the fantastical and erotic atmospheres evoked by Dehmel’s verses into an allegorical, dreamlike, and almost pre-surrealist key. No. 58/100. Lot accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Marca d’Acqua of Milan. (2) Negligible flaws. Excellent overall condition.
