417 - Max Klinger, Amor und Psyche - Opus Va/b. 1880. Opus Va: Complete collection of 15 exquisite (out-of-text) etchings with elaborate aquatint frames, housed in a canvas portfolio with the titles of the plates and the printer’s details embossed on the front cover. 255x170 mm each. Singer, 64/109. Printed on tissue paper and then mounted on heavy-weight backing paper. Numbered on the plate in the lower right corner. Opus Vb: Complete collection of 32 splendid etchings and aquatints on tissue paper mounted on 9 sheets of heavy paper. Approx. 205x360 mm each. Sheets: 313x447 mm. These delightful illustrations of Cupid and Psyche are the only engravings that actually follow the narrative of a poem. As evidence of Klinger’s passion for the subject, a few years after the printing of Opus V, he created the marvelous drawings now preserved at the Kupferstich-Kabinett in Dresden. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Ai Tre Torchi in Turin. (2) Defects and slight stains on the covers of the portfolios. A few small spots along the margins of the sheets, but overall in good condition.
