Amos Nattini, Set of 33 engravings from the Divine Comedy. 1930–40. Collection of 33 wonderful color plates—10 from Purgatory and 23 from Paradise—illustrated by Nattini. 620x435 mm. Sheets: 810x650 mm each. Each signed on the plate along the lower margin. The following Cantos from Purgatory are included: X, XX, XXI, XXII, XXV, XVII, XXVIII, XXIX, XXX, and XXXIII. From Paradise, the following are included: I, II, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XIII, XV, XVI, XVIII, XIX, XXI, XXII, XXIV (appears 3 times), XXVXVII (appears 2 times), and XXXIII. Amos Nattini, encouraged by many prominent figures of the time, including D’Annunzio, devoted much of his life to the study of Dante, creating one hundred watercolors of the Divine Comedy over the course of twenty years, while simultaneously overseeing the publication of the three volumes. His extraordinary series of illustrations led the artist to be regarded as one of the most significant illustrators of Dante in the 20th century, comparable to Doré for his ability to translate the pathos of the Divine Comedy into extraordinary images. (33) Some sheets show signs of wear and discoloration along the margins. The engravings are in excellent condition.
