They married on 16 May 1770 in Versailles in front of over 5000 guests. In addition, a crowd of over 200,000 onlookers watched the final celebratory firework display at the end of the evening. The marriage itself had been many years in the making with King Louis XV and Empress Marie Theresa orchestrating the union when Louis and Marie were still children. The motive behind the match was to end a three-century rivalry between their respective countries France and Austria. Perhaps foreshadowing events to come, the marriage was viewed as bad luck when a big storm the morning of the wedding threatened to interrupt the ceremony, and later that evening after the firework display ended, a huge riot resulted in the deaths of several hundred civilians.
