249 - THOMAS SHOTTER BOYS, O.W.S. (BRITISH 1803-1874)A PATHWAY THROUGH TREESWatercolour, heightened with touches of bodycolour and with scratching out26 x 18cm (10 x 7in.)Thomas Shotter Boys moved to Paris in 1823 and became acquainted with Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828), who encouraged him to take up watercolour painting. While in Paris he shared a studio with William Callow (1812-1908). He returned to London in 1837 and in 1840 and 1841 he became respectively an Associate and then a full Member of the New Watercolour Society. Stylistically this charming work with its focus on light and shadow and the dry brush technique visible in the trees suggests a date from the 1830s and the costume of the figure in the foreground may indicate it was executed on one of Boys's visits to Brussels in the 1830s.
