An Icon of French Taste: The Wardrobe of Princess Ghislaine de Polignac Revealed

M aison L’Huillier unveils a treasure trove of fashion and history: the personal wardrobe of Princess Ghislaine de Polignac. Carefully preserved by her children since her passing in 2011, this collection comprises several dozen pieces of Couture and Haute Couture, bearing witness to a life defined by elegance and modernity.

The Spirit of an Era

This wardrobe, set for auction, transcends a mere succession of designer pieces; it tells the story of a free-spirited, intuitive, and visionary woman whose every outfit reflected her perspective on the times. From Pierre Balmain to Loris Azzaro and Yves Saint Laurent, these Haute Couture creations all bear the imprint of a certain French esprit—one of effortless elegance and impeccable taste.

Among the highlights is a signature piece: the Pierre Balmain Athènes gown, from the Spring-Summer 1972 collection, in multicoloured silk organza, accompanied by its matching long scarf (lot 36 - Est. €2,000 - €2,500). Also noteworthy are a very rare Chanel Haute Couture Parrot Brooch, 1991 (lot 245 - Est. €2,500 - €3,500), a gown featuring antique Greek figures by Yves Saint Laurent from the Libération collection, 1971 (lot 140 - Est. €2,500 - €3,000), and a strikingly modern Jeanne Lanvin Glorieuse dress and large pointed shawl, 1938 (lot 104 - Est. €1,200 - €1,500).

Elegance Incarnate

A key figure in Parisian "café society," Ghislaine de Polignac made her mark across several decades through her distinctive style and art de vivre. A sparklingly charming European aristocrat, she attended the most lavish balls, including the legendary Bal des Têtes organised by Baron de Redé in 1957, and resided for a time in a wing of the Hôtel Lambert. Her elegance, at once classic and daring, established her as a true icon of French taste.

A Pioneer of Modern Fashion

The Princess, however, was not merely a couturier's muse; she was an active player in the renewal of fashion. In 1952, scouted by Max Heilbronn, then director of Galeries Lafayette, she became the first "fashion director" in France—an unprecedented role. Her mission: to modernise the department store's image and rethink its fashion offering to appeal to a discerning clientele while simultaneously democratising style.
