Watches and timepieces

Watches and other marvels can be found in watch and timepiece auctions. In the form of historic, rare or one-off pieces, vintage watches from the 1950s to the 1970s are extremely popular, particularly outstanding wristwatches by leading french and swiss watchmakers like Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Jaeger-Lecoultre, Omega and Breitling.
Fob or pocket watches (so-called because they were carried in a waistcoat pocket) are still highly sought-after in online watch and timepiece auctions. Making their appearance in the 1500s, timekeepers attached to a chain or ribbon were also worn by elegant women around their necks. The golden age – or golden number – of these neck watches was around 1800. But timepiece-making's finest hour was in 1657, when the dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens designed a mechanism with a pendulum that considerably improved the accuracy of clocks.after that, silversmiths began to turn out gilt bronze masterpieces in the form of free-standing, wall and mantel clocks – highly complex and refined, but all available in drouot auctions !

Monumental rhinoceros made of natural agate Christoph Schmitt Niederwörresbach In an impressive creation by Christoph Schmitt, the world's largest rhinoceros made of agate was created, a fascinating masterpiece that combines exceptional craftsmanship with the unique beauty of the gemstone. Over a period of almost two years, 23 months to be precise, the renowned master gemstone engraver worked tirelessly in his studio on this impressive sculpture. The rhinoceros, inspired by Albrecht Dürer's drawing, impresses not only with its detailed, extremely finely engraved, fully plastic, precise anatomical representation of the leathery carapace, but also with its imposing dimensions. With a length of 50 cm and a height of 34 cm, it is a truly monumental work of art. The sculpture was created from a single gigantic block of natural agate from Brazil, which not only gives the rhinoceros its imposing size, but also its unique grain and coloring. The original weight of the rough stone was a proud 85 kg, and after intensive processing by the artist's skilled hands, the impressive work of art still weighs an impressive 30 kg. The sculpture rests on a pedestal made of fossilized wood from Brazil, which weighs 16 kg and measures 52 x 66 cm. He used 57 diamond grinding wheels and almost 300 engraving tools in his work, which was a real challenge, both artistically and physically, due to the size of the stone alone. The completion of this extraordinary sculpture not only demonstrates Christoph Schmitt's craftsmanship, but also his deep understanding of nature and his dedication to art. This monumental creation is not only a masterpiece of craftsmanship, but also an impressive testimony to the symbiosis between man and nature. Please note that this object is taxed. For customers within the EU, statutory VAT of currently 19% will be charged on the hammer price plus 28% buyer's premium.
