FRENCH SCHOOL (17th century) "Latona punishing the peasants of Lycia" High heddle tapestry. With marks from Paris and from the workshop of François de la Planche. It is part of the series of ten cartoons of the History of Diana that Toussaint Dubreuil (1561 - 1602) painted and that was reproduced in the Louvre workshops for a long period. The scene narrates an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses in which the goddess Latona turns some peasants into frogs, punishing them for not letting him quench her thirst. Measurements: 356 x 307 cm

ESCUELA ESPAÑOLA S. XVII Das Werk wird traditionell Juan de Valdés Leal zugeschrieben. Die Ikonographie, die wir hier sehen, steht in engem Zusammenhang mit einem Modell, das sich seit dem 17. Jahrhundert in der bildhauerischen Darstellung des Heiligen stark entwickelt hat, auch wenn es nicht selten in der Malerei zu finden ist. In seiner rechten Hand hält er das sprechende Symbol seines Martyriums: das Messer, mit dem er bei lebendigem Leib gehäutet wurde. In der linken Hand hält er die heiligen Schriften und eine Kette, die sich am unteren Rand des Bildes verliert und auf eine Fessel trifft, die den Hals von Astaroth umklammert, einem Dämon, dessen Schwanz nur in der linken unteren Ecke zu sehen ist. Astaroth, ein verderbter Engel, der von Gott bestraft wurde, weil er sich gegen seine Macht auflehnte, wurde nach der Goldenen Legende von Jakobus vom Mahlstrom vom heiligen Bartholomäus besiegt, als der Apostel in Armenien predigte. Das Werk könnte Teil eines Apostolats sein, einer Serie von dreizehn Gemälden (mit den zwölf Aposteln und Christus in der Mitte), die im 17. Jahrhundert und nach dem Konzil von Trient in Mode waren. Wir kennen Apostolate von Greco, Velázquez, Rubens, Ribera oder Salmerón, die im Prado aufbewahrt werden. 152 x 119 cm
