This antique Japanese Satsuma jar or cricket box is designed in a basket form with a reticulated woven pattern. The handle is painted with detailed figural scenes. This vase features floral motifs and geometric leaf designs on the upper and lower half of the body and neck. The vase is signed on the bottom with Satsuma ware by Mr. Unkai, Ijuin village, Imperial Japan, and has the Shimazu Mon, the crest of the Shimazu clan that ruled Satsuma. Japan, 19th century. Provenance: Private collection in Pennsylvania. Dimensions: H: 18 in., (46 cm.) Perfect.

Japanese Satsuma vase, Ryozan, Meiji Period (1868-1912). The Satsuma vase is ovoid with a pinched neck and flared top rim. The rim of the Satsuma vase is further decorated within the outer lip, a sign of quality from the artist. The base of the vase is signed with the Ryozan mark which has also been painted gold. Provenance: private collection in Pennsylvania. Dimensions: H: 24 in., (61 cm.) Perfect.
