ROBERT KEMM (Salisbury, England, 1837 - London, 1895). "The Priest's Nap. Öl auf Leinwand. Signiert in der linken unteren Ecke. Größe: 71 x 91 cm; 89 x 108 cm (Rahmen). Als Sohn des Schnitzers und Vergolders William Kemm muss Robert Kemms Liebe zur Malerei schon sehr früh geweckt worden sein, denn er war erst vierzehn Jahre alt, als er in der Volkszählung als Künstler eingetragen wurde. In seinen frühen Jahren schuf Kemm zwei Serien von 256 Aquarellen von Kirchen in Wiltshire. Wie seine Zeitgenossen J. Phillip, J. Bagnold Burgess und E. Long unternahm Kemm in den Jahren zwischen 1955 und 1955 eine Reise nach Spanien. Long reiste zwischen 1861 und 1864 nach Spanien und besuchte vor allem Sevilla und Granada. In den Jahren vor seiner ersten Ausstellung widmete sich Kemm hauptsächlich der Porträtmalerei. Seine erste Ausstellung bei der Royal Society of British Artists fand 1874 statt. In dieser ersten Ausstellung zeigte Kemm bereits alle typischen Elemente seines Stils, mit Werken zu spanischen Themen. Erwähnenswert ist die Präsentation mehrerer Werke von Kemm in der Ausstellung "English Romantic Painters in 19th century Spain", die 1999 in Zamora von der Caja Duero organisiert wurde und aus einer spanischen Privatsammlung stammt. Robert Kemm ist im Fine Arts Museum von San Francisco, im Salisbury Museum, in der Wiltshire Archaeological Society, im Sunderland Museum und im Sheffield Museum sowie in mehreren bedeutenden Privatsammlungen vertreten.
