Prestigious Porcelain, Treasures from Private Collections and a Previously Unseen Work by Anna-Eva Bergman at Auction

C outau-Bégarie presents its Provenances et Collections auction, bringing together a wide range of objects, including hunting pieces and hunting daggers, European and export porcelain, Old Master drawings and paintings, textiles, rugs, furniture and works of art, as well as a section devoted to design and modern paintings.
A fine selection of modern and contemporary works is among the highlights of the sale, including what may be its most eagerly anticipated lot: Malstroem, 1974, by Anna-Eva Bergman (estimate: €50,000–60,000). Acquired directly from the artist by the parents of the current owners, this large-scale painting is being offered at public auction for the first time.

Its title refers to the maelstrom, a powerful whirlpool formed by opposing tidal currents, the best-known examples of which include one located off the coast of Norway, the artist’s mother’s country of origin. While her works remain rare on the market, Anna-Eva Bergman is now recognised as a major figure in twentieth-century abstraction, thanks in particular to the work of the Hartung-Bergman Foundation and the retrospective dedicated to her by the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris in 2023.

Also featured in this section are works by François Morellet (2 trames de grillages, 1971, estimate: €20,000–30,000) and Antoni Clavé (La Nappe Imprimée, estimate: €10,000–15,000).

In the design section, several pieces by Erwan Boulloud are also offered, including an elegant Rosanna brass coffee table (estimate: €8,000–12,000).

The sale also brings together several pieces from aristocratic collections. Formerly housed in a private mansion in Provence, a set of three tapestries inspired by the Iliad is characteristic of the production of the tapestry workshops of Oudenaarde, in Flanders, between the mid-sixteenth and late seventeenth centuries (estimate: €12,000–15,000).

Other notable lots include a Chinese lacquer and Parisian varnish commode from the former Rothschild collection (estimate: €20,000–30,000), as well as a fine biblical scene depicting Noah’s Ark by Cornelis Saftleven (estimate: €20,000–30,000).

Among the most substantial groups in the sale is an important collection of armorial porcelain from the East India Companies, originating from a European collection.

Highlights include an imperial Chinese porcelain bowl bearing armorial decoration for the Russian market, from the Qianlong period (1736–1795), circa 1780, decorated with famille rose enamels and the imperial Russian eagle of Catherine II (estimate: €1,500–2,500). A Chinese porcelain plate bearing armorial decoration for the French market, from the Yongzheng period (1723–1735) and featuring the arms of Philibert Orry, completes this group.
