Auction Record for a French glass piece at Daguerre Savoie : €585,000

T his afternoon at Drouot, during the Collections Privées sale conducted by Daguerre, an exceptional glass cup came under the hammer of Aurélie Dugast, of Daguerre Savoie. Following a spirited bidding battle between determined collectors, in the saleroom, online and on the telephone, it was sold for €585,000, far exceeding its estimate of €80,000–120,000, and in the process setting a world record for French glass, across all periods.Made of enamelled and gilt glass and bearing the arms of Choiseul-Dinteville, this cup is a recent rediscovery and stands out for the exceptional quality of both its material and execution. The coat of arms depicted on the foot takes the form of a quartering combining those of the Choiseul and Dinteville families. It may therefore have been presented as a wedding gift, possibly by a member of the Dinteville family on the occasion of the marriage of one of the daughters of Guillaume de Dinteville (1505–1559) and Louise de Rochechouart (d. 1589). It is also conceivable that it was intended as a christening gift for children born of these unions.
EXCEPTIONAL COVERED GLASS CUP, ENAMELLED AND GILT
BEARING THE ARMS OF CHOISEUL-DINTEVILLE, FRANCE,
second half of the 16th century
Motto: IN TE SPERAVI NON CONFVNDAR
Lot sold: €585,000

Their father, Guillaume de Dinteville, was lord of Chenets, Polisy and Dompmartin, bailli of Troyes and écuyer to Duke François, son of François I. A prominent figure of the kingdom, he belonged to an influential family: his brother François II de Dinteville (1498–1554) was a canon of Auxerre, chaplain to Louise of Savoy, Bishop of Riez and ambassador to Rome; another brother, Jean II de Dinteville (1504–1555), was a royal counsellor and ambassador to the court of England, where he was portrayed by Hans Holbein the Younger in the famous painting now held at the National Gallery, London.

The motto IN TE SPERAVI NON CONFVNDAR is drawn from verse 2 of Psalm 31 (Vulgate), originally addressed to God: In te, Domine, speravi, non confundar in aeternum (“In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed.”). In the context of this cup, however, and in the absence of the word Domine, it seems instead to refer to marital union and may be understood as expressing trust placed between spouses.
