Famille Rose Masterpiece: Qing Dynasty Vase Illustrating the Four Seasons

C outau-Bégarie celebrates the refined and scholarly aesthetic of the imperial court under the Qing dynasty, a period when Chinese porcelain reached its pinnacle.
Among the most remarkable pieces is a rare Cong-shaped porcelain vase with a pink ground, decorated in Famille Rose enamels and illustrating the theme of the Four Seasons. Each of its sides reveals intricately detailed scenes: scholars in quiet contemplation, playful children, and flowers symbolising harmony, longevity and prosperity. The Four Seasons motif was especially prized during the Qing dynasty, particularly under the reign of Qianlong (c. 1735–1796).

Several vase designs depict the four symbolic flowers, each associated with a season: plum blossom for winter, peony for spring, lotus for summer, and chrysanthemum for autumn. On imperially commissioned porcelains, it is not uncommon to find these flowers accompanied by poems penned by the Emperor himself, who was particularly inspired by this subject.

Each side of this exquisite vase forms a painting in its own right, depicting the changing seasons through scenes from the lives of scholars and literati.
