Roger Vandercruse dit Lacroix Middle secretary with curtains, Transition period, stamped RVLC Rare and elegant middle secretary of elliptic form, veneered all sides of rosewood with herringbone decoration. It opens in front of two curtains with sliding strips revealing compartments on two levels entirely veneered with rosewood and three rows of drawers. The lower drawer is used as a writing case thanks to a tray decorated with leather that unfolds. It opens in front of a drawer and also has a side drawer which is opened by a secret mechanism integrated in the front pull knob. The top of the piece of furniture is made of a Breche d'Alep marble top partly encircled by a gilded bronze moulding. Our secretary rests on 4 curved feet joined by a crotch shelf decorated with a gilded brass gallery and pierced. Beautiful ornamentation of gilded and chased bronze, including the falls at the corners, the uprights and the shoes of the feet, an apron in front. Transitional period Louis XV Louis XVI Very good condition. Stamped RVLC, for Roger Vandercruse dit Lacroix, cabinetmaker received master in Paris on February 6, 1755. Dimensions : Height: 114 cm ; Width: 84 cm ; Depth: 41 cm The conception of our furniture with a unique design is entirely due to the innovative and creative spirit of one of the greatest French cabinetmakers Roger Vandercruse dit Lacroix. Imagining furniture where utility is pushed to the back burner in favor of artistic creativity, the cabinetmaker designed furniture in the same way that works of art are designed. A piece of furniture in the middle such as ours, obviously allowing an auxiliary use, had above all a role of presentation in an interior of nobility such as an object of art, a sculpture or a painting. It is by this strong aesthetic potential that Lacroix sought to distinguish these pieces and it is the case of our exceptional secretary. A model comparable to ours, but of larger size, is kept in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, also made by Lacroix (circa 1770, Inv. PE 1511). For a very close model : - the secretary stamped RVLC, illustrated p. 797, Pierre Kjellberg " Le mobilier français du 18ème siècle ". - the unsigned secretary, attributed to RVLC, public sale Sotheby's Paris, 16/04/2013, lot n 137 (missing the crotch shelf) - the secretary stamped RVLC, public sale, Paris, Génin, Lesnil et Rambert, 18 March 1990
