PALETTA COSMETICA DELL’ANTICO EGITTO EGITTO, PERIODO PREDINASTICO, 3600-3100 a.C. circa scisto intagliato e levigato, di forma ovoidale con incavi ornamentali intagliati lungo il bordo Lunghezza: 13,9 cm Provenienza: Ole Braunstein (1917–1999); acquisita prima del 1974, da allora tramandata per via ereditaria Braunstein è stato insignito del Premio Høyen nel 1984 Le prime palette cosmetiche egizie compaiono nei reperti archeologici durante il periodo predinastico; tradizionalmente assumevano forme geometriche oppure erano intagliate per imitare le forme di pesci o tartarughe. Inizialmente il loro uso era prevalentemente funzionale: servivano da supporto per macinare e applicare i colori sulla pelle, sia da parte degli uomini che delle donne. Successivamente assunsero anche una funzione cerimoniale, come oggetti da deporre nelle tombe dell’élite o, forse, per l’unzione delle raffigurazioni degli dei.
