P. studiò alla Scuola di Arti Applicate di Hannover e all’Accademia di Monaco, dove inizialmente Böcklin e Stuck divennero i suoi modelli. Egli stesso definì Macke, ma soprattutto Liebermann, come figure determinanti per la sua formazione. Nel 1908 si stabilì a Worpswede. P. realizzò paesaggi dalla composizione quasi architettonica, costruiti a partire da campiture di colore compatte. Musei: Brema (Kunsthalle), Worpswede.
