Durante l’adolescenza, Allen illustrò volumi di altri autori per la Headley Brothers: “The Cradle of Our Lord, 1916” di John Oxenham, «A Garden of Love from Herrick & the Other Poets of the 17th Century» (1917) e «The Man Who Chose Poverty – The Story of St Francis» (1917) di Janet Dykes e Christine Standing.
