Catalogo dei dipinti, vol. 1: 1911–1937, Zurigo 1977, p. 234, n. 302 (con illustrazione) Al centro dell’opera di Max Gubler non vi era la mera riproduzione del mondo visibile, bensì la sua trasformazione pittorica. L’artista zurighese ricevette impulsi decisivi durante i suoi soggiorni sull’isola italiana di Lipari (1924–1928) e a Parigi (1930–1937). Nei suoi paesaggi, ritratti e nature morte sviluppò uno stile pittorico sempre più espressivo, in cui colori vivaci e pennellate dinamiche talvolta quasi dissolvono le forme. In qualità di importante esponente della pittura svizzera del XX secolo, rappresentò la Svizzera alla Biennale di Venezia del 1952.
