Gli Ijaw sono tra i più antichi abitanti del delta del Niger e popolavano la regione già intorno all’800 d.C. Il loro immaginario religioso è caratterizzato dalla fede nella divinità femminile «wonyinghi», negli antenati e negli spiriti della natura («oru»), che sono al centro di molti rituali e vengono raffigurati in maschere e sculture. Le figure in piedi sui copricapi delle maschere degli Ijaw centrali e occidentali sono considerate rappresentazioni in scala ridotta delle sculture da altare di questi spiriti della natura. Possono avere una forma naturalistica o geometrica; la presenza di più volti è interpretata come espressione di poteri soprannaturali.
