MASCHERA IKWARA - Gabon - Punu Metà del XX secolo. Legno, patina scura, pigmenti (caolino). Dimensioni: 27 cm. L'acconciatura è sofisticata, a tre lobi. Gli occhi a mandorla socchiusi sono sormontati da sottili sopracciglia arcuate scolpite in rilievo. La bocca socchiusa a forma di «otto» orizzontale è ricoperta di caolino (bianco). Questo tipo di maschera nera, Ikwara, è chiamata «maschera della notte». A differenza delle maschere bianche, Okuyi, utilizzate in pieno giorno su trampoli, queste maschere nere venivano utilizzate all’alba o al tramonto per rituali segreti di regolazione sociale e di giustizia all’interno della comunità.
