Questa tavola è tratta dalla famosa serie «Il bestiario di La Fontaine in versione daliniana» realizzata dall’artista surrealista e pubblicata da Robert Mouret nel 1974 (Edizioni des Maîtres Contemporains ad Agay, Saint-Raphaël). La serie comprende 12 tavole, tra cui il ritratto di La Fontaine in apertura. «Il cavallo e il lupo» è la sesta. Le lastre di rame sono state forate dopo la stampa.
