Allievo di Kobell a Mannheim, in seguito residente in Svizzera. Brun, vol. II: «A Bienne il suo insolito talento nella pittura di paesaggi attirò l’attenzione dei visitatori stranieri; ricevette numerose commissioni, tra cui alcune dalla corte inglese e da quella russa, e, grazie alla mediazione di Goethe, dal duca Carl August di Sassonia-Weimar.» Thieme/B. citano due paesaggi rocciosi con figure in miniatura conservati al Museo di Gotha. – Sul retro, di proprio pugno: «Etude de Rocher faite en Suisse.»
