THITZ (MATTHIAS SCHEMMEL) (1962 Francoforte sul Meno, opera a Stoccarda e Berlino) Il Cairo, 2000 Acrilico, stampa fotografica a pigmenti su tela. 140 x 160 cm. Firmato e datato in basso a sinistra. Titolo sul retro e cartellino con i dati dell’opera. Thitz ritrae le città portando con sé sacchetti di carta che vi ha raccolto: sacchetti della spesa, stampe pubblicitarie, brandelli di giornale. Li incolla sulla tela, li ricopre di pittura e popola il risultato con il suo «popolo dei sacchetti», quelle figure stravaganti dagli occhi grandi e dalla bocca rossa. In questo modo, nei suoi quadri si annidano veri e propri frammenti della città raffigurata. È proprio questo connubio tra materiale documentario e pittura dal tono narrativo e giocoso ad averlo reso famoso a livello internazionale. «Il Cairo» mostra la sagoma della città in un crepuscolo grigio-blu, un agglomerato di minareti, cupole e grattacieli.
