FRENCH SCHOOL (17th century) "Latona punishing the peasants of Lycia" High heddle tapestry. With marks from Paris and from the workshop of François de la Planche. It is part of the series of ten cartoons of the History of Diana that Toussaint Dubreuil (1561 - 1602) painted and that was reproduced in the Louvre workshops for a long period. The scene narrates an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses in which the goddess Latona turns some peasants into frogs, punishing them for not letting him quench her thirst. Measurements: 356 x 307 cm

ESCUELA ESPAÑOLA S. XVII Opera tradizionalmente attribuita a Juan de Valdés Leal. L'iconografia che vediamo qui è strettamente legata a un modello di grande sviluppo nella rappresentazione scultorea del santo a partire dal XVII secolo, anche se non è raro vederla in pittura. Nella mano destra tiene il simbolo parlante del suo martirio: il coltello con cui fu scuoiato vivo. Nella mano sinistra sono le sacre scritture e una catena che si allunga fino a perdersi nella parte inferiore dell'opera e che incontrerebbe un grillo aggrappato al collo di Astaroth, un demone di cui si vede solo la coda che spunta dall'angolo in basso a sinistra. Astaroth, un angelo corrotto punito da Dio per essersi ribellato al suo potere, secondo la Leggenda aurea di Giacomo del Maelstrom, fu sconfitto da San Bartolomeo durante la predicazione dell'apostolo in Armenia. L'opera potrebbe far parte di un apostolato, un insieme di tredici dipinti (i dodici apostoli e Cristo, al centro), molto in voga nel XVII secolo e dopo il Concilio di Trento. Conosciamo apostolati di Greco, Velázquez, Rubens, Ribera o Salmerón conservati al Prado. 152 x 119 cm
