Bibliography : Jean Piaubert - Pierre Cabane - The editions of the amateur - Page 46 Born in 1900, Jean Piaubert started to paint at the age of 18 and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. He began working in a theater set design studio before moving to Paris. Despite the difficult early years, when he entered the academy of the Grande Chaumière and several workshops in Montparnasse, Paul Poiret spotted him and commissioned several works. During this period, he met Othon Friesz, Raoul Dufy and André Derain. Through their contact, his painting moved away from an overly classical style to a more colorful one. In the 1930s, he abandoned figuration to reach total abstraction in 1945. He exhibited at the Creuze Gallery and became a major artist on the art scene, so much so that the Museum of Modern Art in Paris commissioned a painting from him. He left to represent France at the Sao Paulo Biennial and participated in various international exhibitions. Rewarded by numerous medals throughout his career, his works are now exhibited in major private and public collections including the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York; Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Musée Royale, Brussels; Cologne; Copenhagen; Le Havre; Luxembourg; National Museum of Modern Art, Rome; Santiago; Strasbourg; Turin; Wupperthal.
