The Bison and Geometry
This vase by Charles Catteau combines a frieze of bison with two bands of geometric discs. The animal motif may be a unique variation in the ceramicist’s body of work. The contrast between the mass of the animals and the repetition of geometric shapes gives structure to the composition of this large stoneware vase, which stands 41 cm tall. The silhouettes, reduced to their essential lines, alternate between movement and stillness. The surface follows a rigorous organization based on rhythm, proportion, and the distribution of motifs. After joining Boch Frères in 1907, Charles Catteau developed a decorative vocabulary that combined stylized animal forms, geometric

A Venetian incunabulum
This copy of a masterpiece of Venetian Renaissance typography is about to find a new home in a library.*De Evangelica praeparatione* is a seminal literary work written in Greek by Eusebius of Caesarea, one of the Church Fathers, and as such it has exerted a profound influence on the Christian faith. In this treatise, the theologian aims to prove the superiority of Christianity over pagan religions. Since the use of Ancient Greek had fallen into disuse even in monasteries, and in order to make the work accessible to as many people as possible, in the mid-15th-century, Pope Nicholas V asked the Byzantine

Originating from the Château de Meillant and the Mortemart family, these four panels are attributed to an artist active in Westphalia during the second half of the 15th century. On September 20 (see page 54 of Gazette No. 31), Daguerre Auctions successfully sold off the contents of the Château de Meillant. At that time, the auction house decided to set aside these four panels— The Arrest of Christ, The Crowning with Thorns, The Ascension, and Pentecost —for a later auction specializing in old master paintings. Part of a large altarpiece dedicated to the Passion of Christ, which likely consisted of twelve or thirteen panels, the four works were attributed by the expert to

A cabinet by Jānis Straupe as a metamorphosis
Almost surreal, this cabinet will be one of the highlights of a catalog dedicated to design and consisting mainly of one-of-a-kind pieces. This masterful piece of furniture, reminiscent of a sculpture, pushes the boundaries of everyday objects.Jānis Straupe has been working with wood for over 35 years. The artisan-designer, a member of the Latvian Artists’ Union since 1990 and the Latvian Designers’ Union since 2009, has made a name for himself designing sculptural objects and custom-made furniture. A graduate of the woodcarving department at the Riga School of Arts and Crafts (now the Riga School of Design and Art) during the Soviet era, he went on to hone his craft under the guidance of woodcarver Jānis Poļaks. He then joined the Māksla
