Pierre-Jules Mêne 1810 Paris - 1879 Paris - Deux chevaux - (1865) Bronze. Patine brune. 44,5 x 68 x 23 cm. Signé et daté sur le socle : P. J. Mêne, 1865. Référence : Th.-B. XXIV, p. 385. Ce sculpteur animalier français est représenté dans divers musées, principalement français. Autodidacte, il fut un pionnier de son époque dans le domaine de la représentation naturaliste des animaux. Mêne s'est ensuite consacré exclusivement aux groupes de chasseurs et aux chevaux, qui correspondaient parfaitement aux goûts de ses contemporains et étaient donc très prisés. Au total, l'artiste a créé plus de 150 modèles différents, qui ont connu une large diffusion de son vivant et à titre posthume.
