Contemp. half vellum, marbled paper boards, spine with raised bands (used, spine hastily restored with tape). Rare first edition of the fascinating account of travelling in the Dutch colonies in Southeast Asia and in South America by Nieuhoff (1618-1672), who explored Brazil from 1640 to 1649 and resided in Batavia from 1667 to 1670. The first part with 3 pl., incl. 1 map of Brazil, and 9 in-text ill., contains a history of Brazil from its first discovery by the Portuguese, both lay and ecclesiastical. This second part consists of 40 pl. incl. a map of the Cape of Good Hope and 2 city plans of Pulicat and of Batavia (now Jakarta), engr. of towns and villages, local people, botanical species and four very fine engr. pl. depicting fish, the so-called "Visch-prenten".
