Cette gravure sur cuivre coloriée à la main est tirée de l’ouvrage *A History of the Earth and Animated Nature* d’Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774), publié par A. Fullarton à Londres en 1850. Cet ouvrage avait pour objectif de rassembler la quasi-totalité des connaissances sur les plantes et les animaux de la planète. L’ouvrage *Animated Nature* de Goldsmith a connu plus de vingt éditions jusqu’à l’époque victorienne et a constitué une source d’information très prisée sur le monde naturel.
