ENSOR, James La Belgique au XIXe siècle. 1889 Etching, 17,6 x 24,0 cm, Japan paper, plate signed, dated (marg. very sl. browned unevenly, few marg. spots and ms. numb.). Hinged at upper edges. Under passe-partout. Powerful composition with King Leopold II floating above a panicking crowd being charged by gendarmes. The French text alludes to the demands of the socialists. Extremely rare etching, since Ensor cancelled the plate and stopped selling impressions when he was made a baron in 1929. Even in virtually complete collections such as KBR, this print is often missing. Seldom seen on the market and not presented for auction in the last 10 years. Excellent impression in great condition. Ref. Taevernier 81. - Tricot 77. Prov. [Paul van der Perre (20th c.), Brussels art dealer]. - Collectie Van Cauwelaert-Stubbe.
