Как отмечает Смирнов-Сокольский: « «Басни», изданные Смирдиным в 1834 году, — одно из превосходных русских иллюстрированных изданий вообще и самое замечательное из всех изданных Смирдиным. Гравюры Сапожникова — едва ли не лучшие русские иллюстрации к басням Крылова.»
