De 1945 à 1948, il a étudié à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts, puis de 1950 à 1952 à Paris, à l’Académie de la Grande Chaumière, dans l’« Atelier d’art abstrait » de Jean Dewasne. Il a exposé ses tableaux abstraits pour la première fois en 1953 à la Galerie Arnaud à Paris. À partir de 1968, il a enseigné à l’Académie nationale des Beaux-Arts de Karlsruhe, où il a été nommé professeur en 1972.
