Some of the cardboard leaves with letterpress text on verso. Publisher's richly decorated cloth binding, front cover with an inlaid handcoloured view of the Victoria Falls, surrounded by an embossed and handcoloured view of African wildlife with a lion, an elephant, a crocodile, a giraff, and a hippo. All edges gilt. Rear paste-down with publisher's gilt stamped address (rubbed, brass clasp missing). - Cf. Sidney Mendelssohn. South African Bibliography, with with several variable compositions of this album differing in bindings and in selections of photographs. - Faint foxing here and there, mostly confined to white margins, first plate more severe and affecting image. One page with tear affecting motif. A remarkable collection of beautifully handcoloured photogravures, with views of towns and cities and including several gold mines and other industrial sites. Unter den bezeichneten Bildern finden sich folgenden Titel: Skeleton of a hut showing its architecture. Zulu Police Durban. Women drinking Kafir Beer. Dinzulu (Cetwayo's (sic) son and heir). Mounted in cont. half leather album with gilt fillets on covers and spine (spine renewed, somewhat rubbed and bumped). - Mostly titled in the print, partly also monogrammed (J.E.M., altogether 7 prints) and with inventory number. - John E. Middlebrook was a photographer based in South Africa. He opened his photographic studio in Kimberley, the Premier Studio, in the early 1870s and maintained a second studio in Durban. Among the designated images are the following titles: see above. One with dublet. - Contains three photographs in collotype by W. Schultz with images from Dar es Salaam, typographically inscribed and dated 1897 in the print: see above. - Partly stained and rubbed. One print with missing parts, three others with some image loss due to bursting and rubbing. Some album pages with small losses in margins and a little bit stained and wavy. Interesting collection.
