Maître de "Los Santos Juanes" (Actif en Castille entre 1525- 1550) École gothique médiévale espagnole du XVe siècle. Monumental oil on panel measuring 145 x 95 cm in outstanding state of conservation and polychrome of origin, the scene with which this work delights us represents the painting depicts Pope St. Gregory the Great, when in the year 590 an epidemic of plague was declared in Rome, which caused numerous deaths. For this reason the Pontiff organized a great procession. Arriving at the Bridge of Helium (today the Bridge of Sant'Angelo), in front of the Castellum Crescentii (ancient mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian), the miracle took place. Pope Gregory looked towards the top of the castle, and there he observed the great figure of the archangel St. Michael, sheathing his sword, who welcomes them, very possibly being a commemorative commission from the Archbishopric to the master from Palencia to decorate a newly built church or cathedral. Mit Wasserzeichen (Löwe mit Schwert und Initialen C.D.L.). - Das außergewöhnliche Manuskript vereint 18 handgeschriebene Fabeln in fein leserlicher und geschwungener Schrift. Die lavierten Federzeichnungen, welche die Fabeln begleiten sind mit äußerster Sorgfalt ausgeführt und illustrieren das Werk wunderbar in ihrer minutiösen Darstellung der Tiere und Landschaften. Als Vorbild für das vorliegende Manuskript und die Zeichnungen schien eine von Sadeler illustrierte Ausgabe der Fabeln zu dienen, welche 1743 in Paris erschien: Les fables d'Ésope gravées par Sadeler, avec un discours préliminaire & les sens moraux en distiques. - Papierbedingt gebräunt. Im oberen Rand etwas gewellt. Vereinzelt etwas fleckig. Einige Bll. mit kleinem Wasserfleck. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten. French manuscript with 18 hand drawings. Late 18th / early 19th c. Modern half cloth with marbled boards and mounted cover label (somewhat rubbed). - With watermark (lion with sword and initials C.D.L.). - This extraordinary manuscript combines 18 handwritten fables in finely legible and curved script. The pen-and-ink drawings accompanying the fables are executed with the utmost care and beautifully illustrate the work in their meticulous depiction of animals and landscapes. The model for the present manuscript and drawings seems to have been a French edition of the fables illustrated by Sadeler in 1743. - Paper browned. Somewhat wavy in the upper part. Sporadically somewhat spotted. A few leaves with a small water stain. Overall very well preserved.

In diesem Fall hat der Künstler Mike and the Modelmakers' von M. Sasek gewählt, das 1970 veröffentlicht wurde. Das Londoner Studio von Whiteread lag gegenüber der Firma Lesney, die in den 1970er Jahren der Spielzeughersteller des Matchbox-Autos war. "I chose this book because it is related to where I live and how I work. My old studio was next to the site of the original matchbox factory. As a child I played with matchbox cars, now my children play with them. A lot of those industrial buildings have been demolished in readiness for the 2012 Olympics. I found an original copy of this book in a junk shop in the late 1980's, it seemed like a fitting tribute to those old buildings and the author / illustrator M.Sasek and to those great matchbox cars. I was happy to give it a new lease of life." (R. Whiteread) - Sehr gutes und vollständiges Exemplar. With an original zinc casting and one signed ex libris - serigraph. One of 40 copies of the special edition, signed and numbered by Whiteread herself. The zinc cast with textile cover by Whiteread and numbered and monogrammed. - Rachel Whiteread was invited for this issue to select a book of particular importance to her, for which she then designs a new dust jacket and presents it under her own name as "Reprint".
