Sammlung von drei Original-Photographien, eines handschriftlichen kalligraphischen Gedichts in chinesischer Sprache des Chefgesandten Binchun und einer Original-Zeichnung. Enthält drei Carte-de-Visite-Porträtphotographien (10,3 x 6,2 cm) des Amsterdamer Photographen H. C. Donk, die drei der chinesischen Delegierten zeigen, mit hs. Bildunterschriften. Die Photographien punktuell auf einer Unterlage montiert zusammen mit einer Photographie des Gedichtes auf einer gedruckten Karte mit einer niederl. und engl. Übersetzung, hergestellt von F. Günst in Amsterdam. Das kalligraphische Gedicht von Binchun über den Besuch der Mission in den Niederlanden vom 25. Juni bis 1. Juli 1866 auf einem gefalteten Blatt (ca. 40 x 30,5 cm). Des Weiteren eine Original-Tuschezeichnung eines chinesischen Mandarins, signiert auf Chinesisch und mit einer englischen handschriftlichen Beschriftung "London - 1851". - Obwohl Qing-China immer noch recht stark war, verfügte es 1860 nicht über die notwendigen Mittel, um sich den Forderungen der Westmächte zu widersetzen. Das chinesische Militär konzentrierte sich auf Probleme im Inneren des Landes und nicht auf die Küsten, was dazu führte, dass die verbündeten britischen und französischen Truppen die Qing-Armee besiegen konnten. China war gezwungen, die europäischen Mächte nicht nur als gleichberechtigt anzuerkennen, sondern sich auch an die europäischen Formen der Diplomatie anzupassen. Der Han-Bannermann und ehemalige Magistrat Binchun (1804-1871) leitete die vom Zongli Yamen, dem für die Außenpolitik zuständigen Regierungsgremium, geforderte Erkundungsreise in Europa. Binchun war sich des historischen Charakters seiner Reise bewusst und gestaltete sein diplomatisches Auftreten nach dem Vorbild großer Gesandter. Begleitet wurde er auf der siebenmonatigen Reise von drei chinesischen Fremdsprachenschülern, seinem Sohn, dem Engländer Edward Bowra und dem Franzosen Emile Dechamps, die als Dolmetscher und Reiseleiter fungierten. Während des Aufenthalts in den Niederlanden war ihr ständiger Begleiter der Bauingenieur J. F. W. Conrad (1825-1902), dem das Gedicht und die Fotografien geschenkt wurden. Obwohl es sich bei dieser ersten Mission um eine Erkundungsreise handelte, die keinen eindeutigen Status hatte, traf die Gruppe mehrere Staatsoberhäupter, darunter Königin Victoria. - Mit leichten Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren. The original Chinese calligraphic poem by Binchun on a folded sheet (ca 400 x 305 mm) and an original ink drawing of a Chinese mandarin signed in Chinese and with an English manuscript caption "London, 1851". - Qing-China, although still rather strong, did not possess in 1860 the necessary means to deny the demands of the Western powers since it was under pressure from all sides. During the early years of the 19th century, Chinese military was concentrated in internal areas rather than at the coasts, which meant that the allied British and French troops were this time able to defeat the Qing army. China was forced not only to recognize the European powers as equal, but also to adapt to European forms of diplomacy. After 1860 this became particularly important, when the most-favoured nation clause was eliminated from the treaties with Beijing. Ostensibly an investigation tour demanded by the Zongli Yamen, the government body in charge of foreign policy, was headed by the Han bannerman and former magistrate Binchun (1804-1871). Aware of the historic nature of his journey, Binchun crafted his diplomatic persona after that of the great envoys of the Han. He was accompanied by 3 Chinese foreign language students, his son and with the Englishman Edward Bowra and the Frenchman Emile de de Champs acting as interpreters and tour managers, the group travelled Europe for seven months. During the sojourn in the Netherlands their constant companion was the civil engineer J. F. W. Conrad (1825-1902), to whom the poem and the photographs had been presented.
