The volume explores the aurora borealis, astronomical observations, zoology, ichthyology and botanical discoveries in addition to the detailed travelogue about the country and its people, geognostic observations of the geology. Das sehr seltene Photo zeigt Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) mit anderen Expeditionsteilnehmern und den Schiffskapitän mit weiteren Besatzungsmitgliedern während der Überquerung des Victoria Sees von Fort Florence nach Kampala. - Die Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition, die zum Schluss Afrika von Süd nach Nord durchquerte, wurde vom ehemaligen amerikanischen Präsidenten Theodore Roosevelt geleitet und von der Smithsonian Institution finanziert. Geführt wurde die Gruppe von dem legendären Jäger und Fährtenleser Richard John Cuninghame. Weitere Expeditionsteilnehmer waren u.a. der australische Scharfschütze Leslie Tarlton, drei amerikanische Naturforscher, Edgar Alexander Mearns, ein pensionierter Chirurg der US-Armee, der Präparator Edmund Heller von der Stanford University und der Säugetierforscher John Alden Loring sowie Roosevelts 19-jähriger Sohn Kermit. Die Expedition führte u.a. über Mombasa, Britisch-Ostafrika (Kenia) nach Belgisch-Kongo (Demokratische Republik Kongo) und entlang des Nils nach Khartum im Sudan. John Barrow, qui avait pris part à l'ambassade en Chine de lord Macartney, publia en 1806 cette intéressante description des pays visités au cours du voyage, Madère, les Canaries, Rio de Janeiro, le Cap de Bonne Espérance, Batavia… On y trouve notamment l'importante relation d'un voyage chez les Boushouanas, décrivant une région de l'Afrique de Sud encore inconnue, ainsi que la description de l'île de Java et celle de la Cochinchine (sud du Vietnam) dont c'est la première relation illustrée.
