First French translation by the diplomat A. Van Wicquefort (1598?-1682) of the most complete 17th-c. work on Persia. The English traveller Herbert (1606-1682) was part of the ambassade of Dodmore Cotton sent by Charles I to Persia at the court of the shah Abbas I. During his voyage, he stopped at Madagascar, Goa, Surat, Isfahan, Bagdad and Moluccas. "In Returning to England, Herbert coasted the eastern shores of North America; which gives him occasion to display some erudition on the subject of the discovery of the New World" (Sabin). Contains also information on Japan, China, Ceylon, etc. With some examples of words in Maly (or Malacca) with their French translation (pp. 511-514).
