RHODES, Alexandre de Divers voiages en la Chine, & autres roiaumes de l'Orient, avec son retour en Europe par la Perse & l'Arménie [...]. Seconde édition. Paris S. Mabre-Cramoisy 1666 4to: [8]-342-[1] pp. (very occ. foxing and stains). Contemp. marbled calf, gilt coat of arms on boards framed with a triple gilt fillet, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red edges (left side of front boards, lower joint partly, head and tail repaired, sl. rubbing, corners of front flyleaf repaired). Very good inside condition. Very rare second edition (1st 1653) of Rhodes' account of his travels and missions in Asia (Goa, "île de Salsède", Malacca, Macau, Conchinchina, Tokin and Makassar) and his return to Europe through Persia and Armenia. Destined for Japan, the Jesuit missionary and linguist A. de Rhodes (1591-1660) arrived at Macau in 1623, but was then sent to Vietnam. He was active there until he got banished in 1645 and sentenced to death. His condamnation reduced to exile, he returned to Rome. He was later sent to Persia where he died in 1660. Rhodes was one of the first Europeans to travel through Cochinchina and Tonkin. Copper-engr. vignette on title. Ref. DBS VI:1720:9.- Cordier, Sinica, 2080-2081. Prov. Antoine Barillon de Morangis (d. 1686), "maître des requêtes ordinaires du roi", intendant of Metz, Alençon, Caen and Orleans.
