Vintage waxed platinum print on double-weight paper, in excellent condition, on original cardboard 36,1 x 28,6 cm (cracked, image unaffected). Photographer's handwritten signature in pencil on the original mount.
Ulmann photographed with a wooden view camera on a tripod, taking full plate negatives from which she made her platinum prints. This type of portrait was very important to her: "A face that has the marks of having lived intensely, that expresses some phase of life, some dominant quality or intellectual power, constitutes for me an interesting face. For this reason the face of an older person, perhaps not beautiful in the strictest sense, is usually more appealing than the face of a younger person who has scarcely been touched by life."
