PORTRAIT PRÉSUMÉ DE CLÉOPÂTRE VII Art grec ptolémaïque, v. Ier s. av. J.-C. Marbre blanc H. 31,1 cm Provenance Ancienne collection Mentezan, Belgique, 1972 Ex-Christie’s NY, 11 Déc. 2009 estimée $ 70 000 / 90 000, vendue $ 86 500 Ce portrait représente une jeune femme, sa tête légèrement tournée vers la droite, avec un visage ovale caractérisé par des yeux à paupières convexes sous des sourcils modelés, sa petite bouche aux lèvres saillantes pincées en un léger sourire, le menton arrondi, les cheveux attachés dans un large diadème, d’où s’échappent des boucles le long du front et couvrant la moitié supérieure des deux oreilles. En haut du crâne, présence d’une petite mortaise pour l’insertion d’une couronne, traces d’un petit nœud à l’avant de son diadème. Cette tête rappelle le portrait identifié comme Cléopâtre VII retrouvé à la Villa des Quintilii à Rome en 1784, et maintenant conservé au Vatican (fig. 1), inv. non. 38511. Les deux portraits partagent un visage ovale aux traits juvéniles, des yeux grands ouverts et une bouche petite et charnue. Sur notre portrait, les cheveux ont été soit retravaillés dans l’antiquité, soit fabriqués à l’origine dans un autre matériau, ce qui était une pratique fréquente de la statuaire ptolémaïque en marbre. Depicted as a young woman, her head turned slighlty to her right, with an oval face, her convex lidded eyes beneath modelled brows, her small mouth with protruding lips pursed into a slight smile, the chin rounded, the hair bound in a broad diadem, with ringlets below the diadem along the forehead and covering the upper half of both ears. A small drilled mortice at the crown for insertion of an attribute, traces of a small top knot at the front of her diadem. 121/4 in. (31,1 cm) high. Ca. 1stcentury B.C. This head recalls the portrait identified as Cleopatra VII that was found at the Villa of the Quintilii, Rome, 1784, and now in the Vatican (fig.1), inv. no. 38511. Both portraits share the oval face with a youthful countenance, wide open eyes and short mouth. With the present head, the hair was either reworked in antiquity, or was originally finished in supplementary material, which is typical for Ptolemaic statuary in marble.
