COLQUHOUN, Archibald Ross Across Chrysê, being the narrative of a journey of exploration through the South China border lands from Canton to Mandalay [...]. With 3 specially prepared maps, 30 facsimiles of native drawings, and 300 illustrations [...]. London Sampson Low, Marston, Searleand Rivington 1883 2 vol., 8vo; 2 front. and 28 pl. (tears without loss to map of vol. I). Publ. grey pictorial cloth, flat spines (very sl. soiled). Second edition. Illustrated with 2 portrait-frontispieces of the author, 3 maps in colour (2 fold.), 25 plates of which 5 fold., and numerous in-text ill. The aim of the journey made by the British explorer Colquhoun (1848-1914) was to trace the best route to connect the Burmah and China by railway; the fold. map in 2nd volume depicts a proposed extention of British Burma Railway System. Colquhoun was the first Administrator of the Southern Rhodesia or British South Africa Company.

I missing as often; occ. sl. foxing and soiling, damp stain to upper margin of p. 95 vol. II). Contemp. olive Russian leather, boards framed with a blind fillet and gilt roll-stamp, blind-and gilt-orn. spines with raised bands, marbled edges matching endpapers (some rubbing and scratching, joints of vol. I renewed, part. those of vol. II, front joint of vol. II part. split). First edition illustrated with 2 frontispieces, 8 plates, one map hand-coloured in outline and in-text ill. The English Anglican Heber (1783-1826) served as bishop of Calcutta for 3 years, from 1823 until his death. He travelled widely in the country during his stay.

Mod. three-quarter black leather, blue buckram on covers, gilt-ruled flat spine (covers dampstained, sl. rubbing). First edition of a 6-months journey from and back Bangkok with stops in i.a. Muang Nan, M. Chien Kong and Luang Praband. The object of the journey was "primarily the examination, for the Siamese Government, of a supposed very rich deposit of gems (rubies and sapphires), lately discovered on the left bank of the Mekong, opposite Chien Kong" (Preface, p. v).
