Paul Kother estudió en la Escuela Superior de Artes Gráficas y del Libro de Leipzig desde 1894. Dos años más tarde asistió a la Academia de Bellas Artes de Dresde, donde fue alumno de Carl Bantzer. Compartió un estudio-vivienda en Múnich (1898-99) con el artista del grupo «Die Brücke», Otto Mueller. Una estrecha amistad unía a ambos hombres, ya que Kother se casó con la hermana de Mueller. A través de Otto Mueller conoció a otros artistas del grupo «Die Brücke» y de su círculo, y expuso junto a ellos. A partir de 1914, Kother vivió en Berlín y participó en exposiciones de la galería «Sturm» y del «Novembergruppe». En 1915 también se expusieron obras suyas en la galería Emil Richter.
