Barraud Enmarcado 46,5 × 38,5 cm Tras formarse como diseñador gráfico, Maurice Barraud asistió a la École des Beaux-Arts de Ginebra y, en 1914, fundó junto con su hermano Gustave François y otros artistas el grupo «Le Falot». A lo largo de su trayectoria artística, se dedicó especialmente a la representación de figuras femeninas, que se convirtieron en un motivo central de su obra. Bajo la influencia de la pintura francesa, desarrolló una paleta de colores cada vez más clara y un lenguaje formal simplificado. El cuadro «Japonaise à l'ombrelle», con la representación de una mujer japonesa con sombrilla, retoma un motivo que, en el marco del japonismo, había alcanzado gran popularidad en el arte europeo desde finales del siglo XIX.
