Sus numerosos viajes le llevaron, entre otros lugares, a Italia, el norte de África y Oriente Próximo, donde encontró inspiración para sus pinturas de gran atmósfera. Además, los Alpes suizos siguieron siendo una parte importante de su obra. El presente cuadro muestra el Lac de Champex, en el cantón del Valais, un lago de montaña situado a unos 1'470 metros de altitud.
