Castan Enmarcado 84 × 113 cm El contacto con la pintura paisajística francesa, en particular con las obras de Camille Corot y la escuela de Barbizon, influyó de manera duradera en la evolución artística del pintor ginebrino Gustave Eugène Castan. Formado inicialmente con Alexandre Calame, a quien acompañó en viajes de estudio a Italia y al Oberland bernés, se decantó cada vez más por una visión de la naturaleza más libre y evocadora. Además de paisajes montañosos suizos, pintó bosques franceses, paisajes fluviales y vistas costeras, centrándose especialmente en los cambios de luz. Entre 1855 y 1882 expuso regularmente en el Salón de París y fue uno de los representantes más destacados de la pintura paisajística ginebrina del siglo XIX.
