El sorprendente tema de esta composición muestra a un patricio de la Antigua Roma, ante una difícil elección: adquirir un jarrón precioso para su colección o una magnífica joven esclava para sus placeres… Esta alegoría de la corrupción del poder prefigura la caída del Imperio romano.
