El romántico alemán Friedrich Nerly vivió en Venecia durante más de cuatro décadas y alcanzó la fama gracias a sus magistrales vedutas, en las que captaba la atmósfera inconfundible de la ciudad lacustre. Sus obras combinan un naturalismo preciso con una iluminación marcadamente poética y, en ocasiones, dramática. Esto resulta especialmente impresionante en el evocador crepúsculo de estas dos pequeñas vedutas, que forman parte de una colección privada italiana. Muestran Cannareggio con el Palazzo Labia, al norte de la isla principal de Venecia, así como San Giorgio Maggiore, la isla independiente situada al sur de esta.
