Francesco era el hermano menor de Giacomo Casanova. En su época, fue uno de los pintores más conocidos de su generación, reputación que se ganó a duras penas tras un difícil aprendizaje en el taller de Francesco Guardi, seguido de un cambio de estilo al convertirse en alumno de Simonini. Pintor prerromántico, su reputación fue tal que Giacomo fue reconocido como hermano del gran pintor, y entre sus clientes se encontraban el príncipe de Condé y Catalina II de Rusia. Una vida disoluta le llevó a dilapidar su fortuna y morir en la pobreza.
